(Young) Pioneers - Free the (Young) Pioneers
It took me about 10 listens before I liked this. Until then, it sounded like a bloody mess. I now get really fired up when I hear some of these songs. They feature a mixture of blues, country, and soul forms with a bit of ferocity. They take these forms and twist and contort them to suit the purposes of these songs, these great songs. The vocals of Stackolee (aka Adam Payson, ex-Born Against) sounds like his throat is on the verge of snapping as he donates his body to the soul of each of these songs, pushing the needle in the red like he's testing out a new car. The howl grows on you it does and by the time you get to the fifth track ("Seven Days in May"- great movie, great song) and "Talkin' Johnny Law Blues" (with some great sax work by Tony Weinbender), you're a new member of the (Young) Pioneers cheerleading squad. I'm a also a big fan of the tastefully frenetic bass playing of Martin Violence and the razor-sharp, marching band-like drumming of Fred Lapier as they make these songs triumphant, like hearing The Clash's "English Civil War" for the first time again. (Lookout!)
